The project was inspired by visions of the future and aims to take furniture and seating systems to the next level. "Vento" is a seating system that combines form and function seamlessly. It offers a unique seating experience while adding a touch of elegance to any space.
The standout feature of "Vento" is its semi-flexible aluminum frame, which makes the structure durable and robust. The ergonomic seat and back are detailed with a micro-grooved pattern inspired by the wind. This detail acts as a design element and visually emphasizes the compound surfaces, enhancing cognitive ergonomics.
The seat and back of "Vento" can be manufactured using injection-molded plastic (PP) and finished with a soft feel polyurethane coat. The structure is built using aluminum, with die-cast connectors and bent sheet for the frame. By strategically separating the seat and back, the design achieves manufacturing freedom in terms of surface movement and thickness.
The technical specifications of "Vento" include an overall seat dimension of 510 x 655 x 975 mm and a distance of 330 mm between each seat. The detachable base has a solid cross-section, making the structure heavy and stable, ensuring that the seating system is topple-proof.
Interacting with "Vento" is intuitive. The seat appears inviting and secure, thanks to its cognitive ergonomics. The seat and back feature compound curves that gently hug the body when seated, providing optimal physical comfort. The semi-flexible aluminum frame adjusts to take the load of the user. Additionally, "Vento" adds a sculptural value to the space it is placed in, making it visually appealing.
The design of "Vento" was the result of extensive research, including desk and field research. The designer finalized the materials and manufacturing processes through desk research and collected and analyzed anthropometric data. Field research involved visiting factories to observe the manufacturing process and explore different finishes for the selected materials. The designer also visited popular furniture showrooms to understand current trends.
The creation of "Vento" presented several challenges. Matching the designer's ambitions and vision for the future of furniture was a difficult task. The organic 3D pattern seen on the back and seat required meticulous attention to detail. Rethinking and reimagining the structure of the seating system was time-consuming but necessary to achieve the futuristic concept. Despite these challenges, the design of "Vento" is both ambitious and achievable.
"Vento" has received recognition for its outstanding design. It was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Furniture Design category in 2015. This prestigious award is bestowed upon designs that demonstrate creativity, resourcefulness, and technical excellence. "Vento" incorporates best practices in art, science, design, and technology, contributing to improvements in quality of life.
Overall, "Vento" is a testament to Vir Karamchandani's innovative design skills and his ability to create a seating system that is not only functional but also visually striking. With its futuristic design and attention to detail, "Vento" is set to revolutionize the way we perceive and experience seating systems.
